The early-stage teams that are not on Salesforce are often on HubSpot or still pre-CRM entirely, running the commercial motion out of spreadsheets. At enterprise scale, a system of record is nearly universal.
What the CRM does not do is tell you where the market is. It is a record of your own activity, so it points inward. It shows what your team did and where your deals stand, and it says nothing about the accounts you have never touched or the procedures growing three counties over. That gap is what the next category exists to fill.
This is the layer that answers where the opportunity is and gets reps ready to go after it. These tools take medical claims data, provider records, facility affiliations, and procedure volumes and turn them into market sizing, account prioritization, territory design, and pre-call planning. For medtech specifically, the useful ones map the relationships between physicians, the sites where they practice, the procedures they perform, and the referral patterns that feed them.

In medtech, it carries extra weight because claims about a device have to clear medical, legal, and regulatory review before they can be used, so a rep pulling up an outdated slide is a compliance problem, not just an off-message one. These platforms store approved content, control versions, track which materials are actually used and how that ties to the deal stage, and support rep readiness and coaching.
Highspot and Seismic are the two enterprise leaders, covering content management, rep readiness, and analytics that connect content engagement to where a deal sits, with Seismic strong at producing content at scale for large launches.
Showpad often comes up for surgeon-facing visual selling and reliable offline use in the OR, where connectivity is not a given. Veeva PromoMats is the pick where regulatory review of promotional content is a board-level concern, which is why it shows up most in pharma and larger life sciences organizations.
Conversation intelligence records sales conversations, transcribes them, and pulls out what was said about pricing, competitors, objections, and next steps.
Gong is where most teams land. It sits on top of calls and email, scores deals, flags risk, and gives managers a way to coach without joining every conversation. Chorus, now part of ZoomInfo, and Clari Copilot cover similar ground. Salesforce Einstein Conversation Insights is the option for teams that would rather keep the analysis inside the CRM they already pay for.
The medtech complication is that much of the selling never happens on a recorded call. It happens in a hallway outside the OR, at a lunch, in the five minutes between cases. These tools capture corporate account and IDN conversations well and pick up almost nothing from a rep's day in the field, so the coaching signal is thinner than it is in software sales.
Recording also carries compliance weight here that it doesn't in other industries. All-party consent states limit what a rep can record, and a recorded off-label claim is a discoverable document. Plenty of medtech teams that buy conversation intelligence end up scoping it to internal calls and non-HCP conversations for that reason alone.
The AI layer on top of this moves fast enough that any vendor list goes stale in a quarter. The more durable way to sort it is by what the tool touches: call prep and account research (RepPrepAI, ChatGPT or Claude with a decent prompt), rep practice and roleplay (Hyperbound, Second Nature), and note capture that writes back to the CRM (Gong, Granola, Fathom). Very little of it is built for medtech specifically yet, which is the honest state of the category rather than a knock on it.
Reps spend a large share of the week in a car, and route planning is the small category that decides whether that time gets spent well.
